FAQ

Q: What do kids do at a Mad Science birthday party?

A: During the first 40-45 minutes, the Mad Scientist will engage children with amazing science demonstrations that are conducted with the help of your birthday child and guests. Some examples of experiments that may be included are: fitting a hardboiled egg into an impossibly small space, seeing flash paper disappear and watching indoor fireworks. During the final 10-15 minutes of the party, the kids will make slime, silly putty, or superball to take home. Adding on a rocket launch or cotton candy or other add-on will add 10-15 minutes to the length of your party per add-on.

Q: How far in advance do I need to book my party?

A: Our party schedule fills up quickly. We suggest you book well in advance to get the date and time you want. Generally, at least 4 weeks in advance is recommended.

Q: What do I need to do to make a reservation?

A: You can fill out an online request form by clicking on the “Book now” button. We will respond to your request within one business day. You can also call us at (269) 978-8543 and we’ll be happy to schedule your party over the phone. If you have questions about the birthday parties, we recommend calling so we can answer any questions you may have before you book. We require a 50% deposit to book your party and accept Visa, MasterCard or Discover. We also accept checks or cash. Your deposit is fully refundable up to 3 business days before your party.

Q: What time can I have my party?

A: All dates and times are subject to availability.

Q: Do I need to know the exact number of kids attending my party to book it?

A: No. All we need is an estimate of the number of children you expect to attend. We ask that you plan for the largest number of children expected. On the day of the party, you will be charged only for the number of kids that actually attend. The number of children includes the birthday child (or birthday children).

Q: Do you have any themed parties?

A: All our themes revolve around science. We have age appropriate birthday party activities for children ages 4-12. Please feel free to call us to discuss the available activities. If you have another party theme, we can notify the Mad Scientist, and he/she will do his/her best to incorporate your theme into the experiments and language that is used.

Q. Do you have party rooms or can I have the party at my house?

A: We do not have a party room.  Mad Science travels to your home or location.

Q: Once I have scheduled my party, can I make changes to it later?

A: Any changes to your party must be scheduled at least three business days before your party and will be subject to equipment availability.

Q: Is it okay to have other activities going on while the Mad Scientist is performing?

A: The Mad Scientist will begin at the scheduled start time and continue until our portion of the entertainment is finished. We will not be able to stop for any other activities (ex. food or cake). Please plan accordingly.

Q: What if it rains the day of my party?

A: If rain is expected on the day of your party, we can provide indoor activities or if given advance notice can change the date of your party. Changes to date and time will be subject to availability.

Q: For what ages are your parties appropriate?

A: Our parties are appropriate for children between 4 to 12 years of age. Younger siblings generally watch, but do not actively participate in the party and should not make a take home project. We determine the number of attendees based on the number of children between the ages of 4 and 12 that actively participate. If you have ordered goody bags for your party and have children older than 12 that would like goody bags, you must include them in the number of attendees or you may purchase individual goody bags for an additional fee. Some of the items included in the goody bags have small parts and may not be appropriate for small children.

Q: When do I pay?

A: We require a 50% deposit to book your party. The remaining balance is due the day of the party. You can pay with cash, check or with your Visa, MasterCard or Discover. The Mad Scientist will have an invoice available for you the day of your party.

Q: What is your policy on tipping?

A: If you think your Mad Scientist did a great job, a tip is very much appreciated. Any tip you wish to provide can be given directly to the instructor. We recommend using cash for tipping.

FAQ for parties held at your home or a location besides the Mad Science Lab

Q: If I’m having the party at home when will the Mad Scientist arrive?

A: The Mad Scientist will arrive at least 15 minutes early to set up. He/she will be ready to start the show at the time you booked. You may want to have guests arrive 15-30 minutes ahead of the time you booked with Mad Science so they will have arrived and be ready to start at the time you booked.

Q: What kind of space is needed?

A: The Mad Scientist will need a table for his/her equipment (a card table is acceptable) and the children can be seated in chairs or on the floor depending on the space available. You should have enough room for the instructor to move around comfortably with some space between the instructor and the children. Depending on weather, Mad Science parties can be done outside, but some activities require electricity or water.

Q: How much space is needed for the rocket launch?

A: The Mad Scientist will need a medium to large sized back yard or open space to launch the rocket. If you are not sure whether you have sufficient space, you can always add the rocket launch and then the Mad Scientist will assess whether or not it is safe to launch the rocket on the day of the party. You will not be charged for the upgrade if the rocket cannot be launched safely.

Q: Will I have to provide the Mad Scientist with anything?

A: The Mad Scientist will need a table for his/her equipment. We will need access to water for set-up and clean-up and access to electricity. Please let us know if your party location cannot have either of these so we can provide alternate experiments. Some Mad Science activities also require an open flame such as that of a candle or lighter. If this is not allowed in your party location, please let us know.
